Microplastics can gum up blood vessels in the brain

We’ve littered our world with plastic. Teeny bits of it can be found in just about everything, including our blood. And that’s particularly concerning given that a new study—which watched microplastic particles circulate about in mice in real time—finds that though these teeny pieces are small enough to flow easily through capillaries, their presence can clog blood vessels in the brain.

Microplastics in the bloodstream can induce cerebral thrombosis by causing cell obstruction and lead to neurobehavioral abnormalities

Human health is being threatened by environmental microplastic (MP) pollution. MPs were detected in the bloodstream and multiple tissues of humans, disrupting the regular physiological processes of organs. Nanoscale plastics can breach the blood-brain barrier, leading to neurotoxic effects.
